Corporate Challenge Helping Fund Hospital Foundation

On Monday 1st May mountain bikers will be out to make a significant difference to the lives of those in North Queensland as part of the Townsville MTB Festival presented by Mike Carney Toyota.

In the inaugural year of the event, the Townsville Hospital Foundation has been chosen as the charity of choice, with all funds raised from entries in the ‘Corporate Challenge’ to go towards this important community service.

“We exist purely to make a difference for the patients, visitors and staff, that spend time at our hospitals and health clinics,” said Foundation General Manager Judy Higgins.

“We are really about making it a bit more comfortable and bit more at home for those being treated and for their family members visiting or staying with them. We assist patients that are in hospital care for a short or extended period of time.”

For 28 years the Foundation has provided vital assistance to those involved in the health care system, not just in Townsville itself, but across a large geographical area.

“We have 20 centres across North Queensland that all fall under what is categorised as the Townsville Hospital Health Services, and that ranges from Ayr, Ingham, Charters Towers, Palm Island, Cardwell and Hughenden just to name a few,” Ms Higgins remarked.

From supporting the big projects like the development and refurbishment of the children’s ward, to simply providing a cup of coffee to someone who may be going through a tough time, the Foundation looks out for those in their own backyard.

“We really cover quite an array of services and we have an army of nearly 200 volunteers that give their time selflessly every day of the week.”

“The Townsville community has been doing it tough over the last few years not just with weather events but economically. We’re just used to sticking up for our own and supporting locally so that’s why we are really proud to be one of the only 100% local charities in North Queensland.”

Mountain Bike Australia CEO Shane Coppin said it was pleasing to be able to help a worthwhile cause through one of MTBA’s major events.

“It’s great to know that in a small way, just through riding your bike with family or friends having fun, you can make a big difference to other peoples lives.”

The ‘Corporate Challenge’ will be held at Cape Pallarenda from 11am on Monday 1st May, with entry costs $100 for a team of 4.

There will be prizes for fastest team, best dressed and an encouragement award.

“We are encouraging our staff and all the local community members to be supportive of events that support the Townsville Hospital Foundation,” said Ms Higgins.
