Development

Junior Development Camp

The first Elite Junior development camp was held last week on the Gold Coast. The theme for the camp was "Athlete Profiling" and riders were put through a battery of tests to determine the physical, mental and technical capabilities.

Utilising resources at Bond University Sports Science and access to the 2018 Commonwealth Games XCO course, the group demonstrated some of the skills which have made them the top performing juniors in Australia.

They concluded the camp with a self assessment activity and plan on how to keep developing as riders and working on their weaker areas.

Riders gave the Nerang course a big 'thumbs up'! Some of the athletes will be representing Australia at the upcoming World Championships in Cairns in September.

The next Elite Junior camp will be held in Bright in July. More details including how to register will be released soon.

Trails

Trail Development Workshop

MTBA will be delivering two, one day trail development and maintenance workshops in Townsville 20 and 21 May. Hosted by the Townsville Rockwheelers, the workshop will provide both theoretical and practical tuition in the maintenance of MTB trails and is based on the IMBA principles.

Some of the topics covered in the workshop include sustainable trail design, trail armouring, identifying issues and planning remedies.

For more information on the workshops or to register please visit:

20 May workshop - https://online.mtba.asn.au/ERegister.aspx?E=3677

21 May workshop - https://online.mtba.asn.au/ERegister.aspx?E=3706

This workshop is subsidised by the Qld Government, Department National Parks, Sport and Racing through the State Development Program.

Trailforks

Trailforks is a free mountain bike trail database and management system for riders, clubs and associations and is owned by Pinkbike.

Many MTB clubs, trail care alliances and riders within Australia already use Trailforks to log trail networks, places to ride, submit trail reports and add photos and videos.

There is also a facility for users to make donations (Trail Karma) to clubs and associations to assist with trail maintenance and construction activities.

The Trailforks downloadable app is user friendly and allows users to download offline trailmaps for use while out riding.

Trailforks is also a valuable tool in providing data to assist with painting a picture of the MTB landscape and community in Australia.

Clubs

D’Aguilar Range Cycling Club (DRCC)

May, June and July is our peak period for events in 2017. We’re proud to be involved with the 2017 MTBA DHI National Championships at Mt Joyce Mountain Bike Park Friday 12/05/17 to Sunday 14/05/17. The following weekend we have a club DH race at Beerburrum on Sunday 21/05/17. We’re looking forward to seeing the nation’s best one weekend then the best of grass roots the next.

We have a small break until our next event at our main centre Baden Powell Park, Samford (Scouts) for round 2 of the Sunshine Series (XCO) Sunday 11/06/17. This is always a hotly contested event on our short and sharp course.

Our final scheduled events for 2017 are rounds 2 & 3 of the 2017 Cyclo-Cross National Series (NCXS). This is also at Baden Powell Park, Samford (Scouts). DRCC is pleased to be involved with this ever growing segment of our sport and is grateful of the support from Queensland Cyclocross to help make this a great event.

We’ll be calling for volunteers to help prepare both of these courses at Scouts to deliver fun, friendly and competitive racing for all.

Mountain Biking Bundaberg

Mountain Biking Bundaberg has one of the best trail networks in QLD!  Our onsite facilities include a sheltered picnic area, toilet and a decent sized car park. The trails are well marked and maps are available at the trailhead to take with you on your ride to avoid getting lost. The trail signs are way-marked so you can navigate your way around using your GPS.

With the recent visit from Cyclone Debbie, the Cordalba State Forest saw a lot of water, so much so that the entire park was closed by QPWS for everyone's safety.

In the weeks following the reopening of the trails, we held a few working bees to fix some damage & tidy up our trails.

We often talk about "trail fairies" doing all the work but we feel it’s necessary to put some faces on the title "trail fairies". It's these priceless volunteers who give up their day of riding to maintain our trails. We can never thank them enough for what they do.

So let’s hear it for all the dedicated volunteers everywhere, who continue to create & maintain all the mountain bike trails, so we can enjoy them time & time again.

Protecting your future

You’ve had a mountain bike accident and can’t work as a result of your injuries, threatening your financial security.  But did you know that simply being a member of a superannuation fund can entitle you to disability insurance and cover you if you’re too ill or injured to work?

Similar to insuring your house or car, you can also protect yourself with death, income protection and/or total and permanent disablement insurance so you're covered if something unforeseen happens.

Use these 3 simple steps to make sure you’re covered:

1.      Check the fine print

Unfortunately fine print can hide tricky clauses that may prevent you from accessing your insurance benefits. Look out for common exclusions such as pre-existing illnesses or injuries and waiting periods which might impact your level of cover.

2.      Examine your policies

Check all of your insurance policies, not just superannuation - other policies such as mortgage, life, and travel insurance may have hidden benefits that also provide you with protection in times of need.

3.      Obtain advice early

Seek advice and make a claim promptly as the processing of insurance claims can be lengthy.  It’s important to know what cover you have and make sure you are eligible.
