MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT

Welcome back from the holiday break, and I hope you’re all ready for a very big year for mountain biking in Australia.

We have the World Cup in Cairns in April and the Olympics in Rio in August.

But before then, this weekend the Aussies will be wearing the green and gold in the World Cyclocross Championships and Jason English will be aiming for his 7th world title at the WEMBO World Solo 24 Hour MTB Championships in Rotorua at the end of February.

Then it's on to Bright for the National Championships in March, next is Queenstown, New Zealand the following weekend for the Oceania Championships.

We have just concluded the XCO double header in our National Series at Pemberton, with UCI Cat 1 and Cat 2 races and a number of Kiwis came over to battle our riders.

It was a great weekend of high-quality racing in the tall trees, dominated by Dan McConnell and Bec Henderson, but also with a lot of riders showing great potential for the future.

The weekend at Pemberton highlighted just how important our volunteers are to making mountain biking happen in Australia.

Not just for racing, but for all who enjoy riding a bike on the trails. Mark Hudson’s vision for Pemberton has come to fruition and, together with Tony Tucknott, they have established it as a great place to visit and ride. Thank you to both.

On the East Coast, the Australia Day Honours and Awards saw another volunteer, Tathra’s Andy Johnson, receive the Medal of the Order of Australia (OAM) for his long standing commitment to the coastal community of Tathra.

Anyone who has ridden Tathra, from World Champions like Jason English down, appreciates the work that has been put into the area over a decade by Andy and the team of local trail builders and club members there.

If you haven’t been there, you’re missing out on some fun riding. Andy’s award is fitting recognition for his contribution to the region - and it is a contribution that extends beyond being the founder of the Tathra MTB Club - such as aussie rules, surf lifesaving and soccer.

Congratulations Andy !

MESSAGE FROM THE CEO

Welcome to 2016!

I hope that you have all had a terrific start to the new year, with friends, family and laughter and of course testing out those new bikes from Santa that I bet you were all after!

It's been all go, since opening doors here at MTBA for the New Year, with so much activity and initiatives going on in member services, National events, development pathways and representative programs.

From reviews of the international program, a UCI World Cup in Cairns, a range of National Series, and National Championship event, Junior Development and Education programs along with a significant focus on MTBA membership and Club/Promoter support, the first six months of 2016 are going to be “full” on.

With the World Championships to be held in Czech Republic later this year in June, entries are now open for riders. Also expressions of interest for team staff will be out soon for those interested.

Similarly, we are busy working to deliver the World Cup in Cairns and hope to develop a great event and importantly a great event experience. If you would like to be a part of this exciting World Cup event, no worries, we have begun seeking expressions of interest from volunteers; perhaps just like you?

World Cup Cairns Website

On the recreational side we are introducing a Latte MTB Fun Ride for the first time to be held at our National Champs on the Sunday morning. And we know mountain bikers will love combing their two favourite things Coffee and riding while out on the National Champs course at Bright in March. Details will be up on our website soon of how you can enter.

From the recent MTB Summit in Mt Buller, a working party has been established to further investigate the development of a a Australian standard for trails, something MTBA has advocated for well over 18 months.

MTBA is pleased to be involved in continuing to facilitate the development of these standards in-conjunction and now with an ownership and commitment from landowners, trails, builders.

With new opportunities and new events, that are available to every member it would be hard to ask yourselves why you weren’t a member?

Now available from Mountain Bike Australia, your membership includes great features such as;

• Complete coverage, to both the rider and the community through insurance,

• A number of new benefits that will soon be available to all MTBA members,

• As well as improvements towards the support and and growth of the sport and related networks.

Through these improvements with our MTBA memberships, it will help boost and support the sport with member clubs and private promoters which may lead to further trails development programs, that are currently discussed positively within Adelaide and various other parts of the country.

With so much happening, in the beginning of the new year, I feel it will be an exciting year to be a part of Mountain Bike Australia.

COACHING AND JUNIOR DEVELOPMENT

Coach Education

The past 12 months has seen some fundamental changes put in place in MTBA’s coach education program and the results of these are starting to flow through.

The introduction of trainee coaches at junior development camps has enabled many coaches to complete their practical assessments far more easily than was previously possible, and as a result, we have doubled the number of Level 1 MTB coaches around Australia since June 2015.

The running of a UCI Level 2 coaching course in Australia last December has increased our Level 2 coach number to 17. A huge boost.

It’s also very encouraging to see a number of high profile athletes begin the transition into coaching. In the past few months we have seen multi time XCO national champion Chris Jongewaard (Level 1 MTB) and multi time world 24 hour champion Jason English (UCI Level 2) complete coaching courses.

Delivery of the new Level 0 Skills Coach Course has begun it’s rollout across Australia.

Junior Development

With the National Series now in full swing the MTBA development squads are reaching the final stages of their 12 month program. The men’s XCO, women’s XCO and DH U17 development squads all held very successful camps during January in Adelaide, Brisbane and Bright.

The camps are skills focussed and also include sessions on anti-doping, nutrition, psychology, and testing. Members of these squads have dominated the U17 and U19 podiums at all the National Series events so far. Applications for the next phase of this program will be open soon.

The squad program was also extended to provide assistance to athletes who would otherwise be unable to attend National Series events due to financial and logistical reasons. This has seen between 4 and 12 athletes gaining assistance at each event so far this season. This program is being expanded for the National Championships in Bright and applications are still open here.
