PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE

I sent you all a personal message yesterday about the future direction for MTBA operating as a Company Limited by Guarantee.

https://www.mtba.asn.au/about/2016-annual-general-meeting/

This change is vital for MTBA to operate as a National Sporting body and I hope you will support it.  Please contact me if you have questions. president@mtba.asn.au

The Willo Camp was held on 4/5/6 November and 29 junior riders from NSW, ACT, TAS and QLD received the benefits of skills coaching and team development. The Willo Camp is one of the activities funded by the foundation established to remember Australia’s World Solo 24 Hour Champion, James Williamson, and much of the funding is generated by the Willo Enduro - one of MTBA’s national XCM rounds. Thanks to Meg Patey, plus Dylan Cooper, Eliza Kwan, Mark Tupalski and Claire Whiteman for this great opportunity for our juniors.

I attended the Cycling Australia Annual Awards where Jason English, Caroline Buchanan, Jackson Frew, Sian A’Hern, Jason Archer and Sharon Heap were honoured for their world performances this year.   Congratulations to all the mountain bike nominees. Two days later I was able to visit the Red Hill Riders on the Mornington Peninsula to see the work they have been doing with the development and promotion of a legal train network at Arthur’s Seat. Great work form Mark Gardner and the club, and the new chairlift there is planned to have a mountain bike lift capability. It was also good to be able to talk with the parents of the young riders there who were doing a ride session with local World-Downhiller Ellie Wale. Clearly a great program.

Mountain Bike Australia and BMX Australia had the opportunity to present our proposals for a unified cycling body to the Australian Sports Commission and our ideas were well received. We need to ensure that our sport develops nationally as a whole, and not in a fragmented fashion.

And finally, it has been a while coming but worth the wait. It was great to see Sarah Riley back on a back (and back on the podium) at the Bendigo 6 hour last weekend. It has been a long recovery road for Sarah but her smile his back. Welcome back to racing Sarah !

Mallacoota Makes Moves For More Riding

Mallacoota College held their first interschool MTB event last Thursday. The riders endured the gruelling 'heart break hill' as well as some 'cooling off' thanks to the local fire brigade.

The college has taken a big step up and affiliated as their own MTBA mountain bike club and we look forward to seeing the sport grow in the school and community.

WHO ARE YOU?

Lyesterfield District Trail Riders

The Lysterfield District Trail Riders (LDTR) are the only sole volunteer group who look after all the mountain bike trails within Lysterfield Park, Victoria. The club is managed wholly by volunteers and currently has 13 committee members working hard to improving the riding experience at Lysterfield Park. We currently offer monthly trail builds, social and fun Friday Night Races, monthly social rides to other mountain bike trails and monthly Family/Beginner social rides around Lysterfield Park.

Our FFLL races are very popular with kids and families due to the relaxed atmosphere. We have been getting numbers around the 80 riders mark for each race recently.
At the moment, a few of the trails at Lysterfield Park are currently getting a “makeover” from a professional trail building company. One of these trails is the State Mountain Bike Course which was originally made for the 2006 Commonwealth Games.

All of the money raised from races, donations and memberships goes straight back into the MTB trails at Lysterfield Park and to improving LDTR.

Southern Downs MTB Club

Its been busy times for Southern Downs Mountain Biking Club with the birth in early October. So far we have 20 members but an increasing number of interested riders in our area. We formed our club from mates that love riding together, we might only be small currently but have big plans!

We have a very beautiful region to ride in with some of the most magnificent state forests and  boarder range areas. We currently ride in Broadwater and Passchendaele State Forestrys on fire trails but are pleased to announce that of last week we have struck a deal with Southern Downs Regional Council with the use of an area of their land not even 2kms from the tourist town of Stanthorpe called Mt Marley.

Our club is about to get a detailed trail design with hopefully around 20kms of trails only 5min ride from the town centre. We are hoping to make our region a mtb region with a magnificent trail network to bring mtb riders to our towns.
We are looking to the future!

Cape Range Riders

Cape Range Riders Exmouth is located in the Northwest region of Western Australia and has been established for two years come February.

It is located in a desert landscape with limestone formations and red pindan soils that overlook breathtaking views of the pristine waters of the Ningaloo reef.

The riding is raw, rugged and technical, leading to an all mountain style of riding. It all started with a few friends out riding old disused 4wd tracks and kangaroo trails.

With some excellent navigation on hand, we inevitably always got lost, but somehow we always found more tracks to get lost on for the next ride. The rides became either more technical or steeper and the necessity for better bikes and more gear was essential, or that’s what we all told our wives!

Interest grew in the sport and we formed Cape Range Riders so we could approach the relevant authorities to start building sanctioned trails in the region. During a family day at the local Whaleshark Festival, we conducted some skills clinics to increase the number of people riding, especially the kids. The day was a great success but we realised that a lot of these kids were already better riders than us, doing whips off the jumps and wheelies as far as the eye could see.

A Trails Master Plan is now on the way and should be finished mid next year, with at least one concept plan done ready for construction. In the meantime, my friends and I will still be found piling up some rocks to form a dodgy jump or trying to navigate through the spinifex grass to find where we came from or guess where we’re going. If you’re up this way, put on a set of thick side walled tyres and let us take you on an adventure ride.

Central Australia Rough Riders

CARR-Alice Springs Mountain Bike Club has just finished it’s spring cyclocross season, based in and around the grounds of Alice Springs velodrome. CX, desert style, starts up again in February as a perfect lead in to the season.

The inaugural MTB club in Alice Springs started in the 1990’s after a quiet period it started again in 2010 as an MTBA affiliated club and now has around 150 members. With around 300 km of MTB tracks around town, Alice Springs has one of best track networks in Australia, all within a few minutes ride.

The club runs a full program of racing through the year including CX, short-track, endurance and the annual Easter in the Alice stage race.  Alice Springs has produced some of Australia’s top mountain bike riders including Chris Jongewaard, Terri Rhodes, Ryan Standish and Luke Pankhurst. Even Cadel came from just down the road.  It must be the terrain.

CEO'S MESSAGE

Mountain Bike Australia’s upcoming Annual General Meeting is a major opportunity for the organisation to take the next step forward in MTBA’s future.

The move to becoming a Company Limited by Guarantee is a process that has taken considerable time and thought, and now the opportunity lies in your hands to help resolve the direction of this organisation.

The constitution and model of Company Limited by Guarantee, is the structure preferred by the Australian Sports Commission (ASC) for National Sporting Organisations (NSO), which MTBA is still fighting to attain.

In becoming a Company Limited by Guarantee, it will give MTBA new credibility and the opportunity to be better placed when vying for funding and support to aid and assist your clubs who are affiliated with us.

For clubs affiliated with MTBA there are definite benefits when applying for State and Local Government grants. It will allow MTBA to endorse any application by clubs when applying for funding grants.

What will it mean for you as a member?

On a day-to-day basis there will be no impact upon our members, except that you will see improvements in governance by the board in checks and balances, the attraction of new board members, better access to funding opportunities and reporting to ASC.

This decision should not be made around individual personalities or past histories but what is in the best interests of Mountain Bike Australia and its future.

This change toward a Company limited Guarantee and its constitution is not borne from any hidden agenda’s but the possibility of the development and evolution of mountain biking in Australia.

As part of this process MTBA intends to introduce a number of advisory commissions that will work with management to better understand and deliver new initiatives, resources, programs and outcomes to all the MTB community.

Proposed commissions include; Inclusion (Women, LGBTQ, Indigenous); Technical (sport); Advocacy, Participation (clubs, schools, members); Education and Pathways; High Performance.

And it is because of this we seek your support.
