Oceania Mountain Bike Championships to Toowoomba

Toowoomba’s families and the local economy will receive a boost, with the city to host five new mountain bike events over the next three years including the Oceania Mountain Bike (MTB) Championships in 2015 and 2017 at Jubilee Park.

Tourism and Major Events Minister Jann Stuckey said the addition of these events was a major boost to tourism and would further cement Southern Queensland Country’s reputation as a mecca for riding enthusiasts.

“The first event will see more than 400 riders and media converge on Toowoomba for the Oceania MTB Championships from 26-29 March 2015,” Ms Stuckey said.

“Tourism and Events Queensland and Cycling Australia’s four-year contract will then see an international mountain bike event held in Queensland each year until 2017 – a significant boost for the region.

“Supporting events like these aligns with the Queensland Government’s 20-year plan for tourism, Destination Success, which recognises the need to deliver events that drive repeat visitation to regional destinations.

“We promised at the election to grow tourism after it was neglected by Labor and these events will help us continue to deliver.”

Member for Toowoomba North Trevor Watts welcomed the announcement by Mountain Bike Australia and said it would create an important tourism and events legacy for his local community.

“This is fantastic news for Toowoomba and will provide a big boost to our region’s tourism industry as well as deliver significant economic benefits for families and hard-working small business owners,” Mr Watts said.

Mountain Bike Australia (MTBA) President Russ Baker highlighted the importance of the Oceania MTB Championships, a world-ranked competition which rotates among countries of the Oceania Confederation.

“As a Continental Championship, it is the next step above National Championships for riders on their way to World Cups and Championships, and allows South-Pacific’s elite and developing riders to gain valuable international ranking points for themselves and for their nations, which is vital in the lead up to the 2016 Olympic Games,” Mr Baker said.

“The MTBA Australian National Series provides a similar pathway for our riders at national level and I am pleased to have this commitment from the Queensland Government to host three successive rounds.

“Toowoomba will be a great venue for all of these events and we look forward to 2015.”

Toowoomba Regional Council Mayor Paul Antonio said the new events would complement the existing international and national cycling competitions held across the region.

“In early 2015, the Toowoomba region will again host the Oceania Road Cycling Championships,” Cr Antonio said.

“This will be followed in May by the FKG Tour of Toowoomba, Queensland’s sole round of the National Road Series which offers spectators the chance to see the best emerging professional cyclists and is the feature event of Toowoomba Cycle Fest.

“This festival is a showcase of all cycling disciplines and encourages community involvement at numerous events.

“Council, Toowoomba Mountain Bike Club, Toowoomba Cycling Development, other cycling clubs and sponsors welcome the addition of the new top-level competitions to boost the region’s sports tourism appeal.”

PMBC U15 Group 2013 048

For July, we're launching an initiative called ‘Sharing Great Club Ideas’. The aim is to recognise and share some of the fantastic initiatives and events that have been implemented by our clubs.

By circulating these great club initiatives, we hope to increase exposure for the initiatives and our clubs, and to inspire and strengthen the Mountain Bike Community at club level. We're also offering a prize for the best submission!

To participate in the promotion, clubs must submit 2 of their best initiatives (ranked in preferred order). Sample submissions may include but are not limited to ideas, events or races that have been carried out in 2013-14.

Submission requirements:

  • Describe each initiative in 25 words or less.
  • Include 1 photo (preferably 1MB or smaller).
  • Link to an article (if relevant).
  • Link to the club’s Facebook page (if you have one)
