Carlson and King dominate the Real Insurance Australian MTB Season Super D at Buller

Josh Carlson (NSW) and Jenni King (VIC) won today’s Elite Super D races in Mt Buller, both backing up their wins in Perth to open Round 2 of the Real Insurance Australian MTB Season.

Racing took place on the scenic Mt Buller Super D course that follows the iconic Delatite River Trail. Riders had a fast 12.1 kilometre ride along the riverbanks, crossing the river twelve times and finishing at the base of the mountain.

In the Elite Men’s race, Josh Carlson took the win by almost 20 seconds from Sid Taberlay (TAS) and Andrew Blair (NSW). Josh was focused on maintaining speed “There were many sweeping turns, the aim was not to touch the brakes”. Speaking about the technical nature of the course, Josh said “You can’t turn off your concentration at all, the results can be diabolical: you could land in a river, or even off a cliff”. With plans to focus on Super D racing in 2012, Josh will be racing in America with the Australian Giant Factory Team.

Jenni King won the Elite Women’s race from Katherine O’Shea (VIC) and Rebecca Henderson (ACT). Jenni has had an amazing start to the Australian MTB season, undefeated in 4 national races across the 3 cross-country disciplines. Jenni said “It was challenging, there were high speeds and lots of fast risky, corners heading into water bars and jumps”. While she’s looking forward to trying to maintain her perfect record in the season, she said that “Todays win was a bit of a surprise, I played it safe and rode quite conservatively”.

Racing in round 2 of the Real Insurance Australian MTB Season continues throughout weekend in Mt Buller. Saturday sees the Elite Women’s Cross Country at 9:30am, Elite Men’s Cross Country at Midday and seeding runs for the Elite DownHill at 4pm. Sunday features the Point-to-point and Downhill racing.
